CONFRIDES |
This village was originally an old Muslim farmhouse called Aljofra, after its conquest in the year 1264, James I of Aragon granted the village to his serviceman Vidal de Sarria. Although the village remained in the hands of two Sarria generations, it was soon transferred to the Infante Don Pedro. Later, the Cardona family and the Ariza family ruled the village jurisdiction. During the second half of the fourteenth century, and during the war with Castile, Confrides was conquered by the Spanish troops and kept under its rule until 1364 when it was recovered by Pedro IV of Aragon. In the early Sixteenth century, and as a result of the Germanies war, its Muslim population (which by the time could rise up to 120-160 people) was forced to convert into Christianity. The Mudejar people of Confrides reluctantly accepted his forced conversion and in 1526 they rebelled against the decision of the Government Junta of 1525. A few years before the expulsion of the Moors (1609), Confrides had about 240 inhabitants, mostly Moorish who strongly opposed against the deportation and they fled to the mountains of the ALAUR Valley. Confrides was carlist (supporter of the Archduke Charles of Austria) during the War of the Spanish Succession.
The village of Confrides is located on the north side of the Sierra de Aitana and it is one of the highest villages (altitude) in the province. Confrides rises up to 785 m above sea level and it is located in the upper valley of Guadalest, on the border between Marina Baixa and the region of Comtat. Hikers will find many possibilities, in this municipality of 42.20km2, exploring the Sierra de Aitana and the Sierra de Serrella. |
